Starting a Distance Selling Pharmacy (DSP)

Before you start, one key aspect to understand is that a DSP license in the UK is primarily a private pharmacy which then can become licensed by the NHS enabling it to dispense NHS prescriptions. To set up a conventional style, bricks and mortar NHS pharmacy you must demonstrate to the NHS / UK government health authority that a pharmaceutical need is present in the area where you intend to establish the new business. This is often very difficult as you need to look at the demographics of the area and prove hotspots where people cannot access medicines. However, as there is a remit that DSPs must serve the nation as a whole these hotspots need to be proven. 


Distance Selling Pharmacy Application

Once you have decided on which type of pharmacy you are looking to create, the application process for a distance selling pharmacy will need to be submitted to the GPhC. This process costs around £750. Some pharmacists find this application process difficult as the proposed pharmacy must meet the GPhC's Five principles by filling out the official 40+ questionnaire. The use of a specialist third party would be highly recommended to expedite the application and ensure that the £750 fee does not need to be paid more than once.
